Hello everyone! Welcome to my first blog post!
I was thinking earlier that I should do a review. Joy!
i recently watched kiki’s delivery service for the first time and thought i should share with you guys my experience! i am a huge ghibli fan and am even surprised at myself that i haven't watched this movie until now!
OVERALL RATING:
Let's start with a little summary!
kiki’s delivery service centers around a young witch named kiki. in the witch world, it is custom for every new witch to find a city to train when they turn thirteen. kiki, who is now this age, is ecstatic to take off on the first full moon in clear skies to begin her journey on becoming a good, trained witch.
on her journey, kiki is accompanied by her kitty companion jiji, whom with a not-so-bubbly, and rather
sarcastic personality, always likes to say what’s on his mind. sometimes he can frustrate kiki, as she expects him to back up her opinions when he can really just say the opposite.
Jiji! |
it is kiki’s dream to find a city on the water, so she sets out in hopes of just that, but on her search, bad weather approaches and she is forced to seek shelter. kiki eventually finds a boxcar attached to a train with hay inside. there, her and jiji sleep for the night.
while they’re sleeping, the train starts back up and moves, and in the morning, kiki finds that the boxcar she’s in is full of cows! by this time, the rain has now stopped and kiki continues her broom ride, where she finds the perfect city on the water, where civilians haven’t seen a witch in years, and some others haven’t seen one at all.
it may have seemed great at first, but kiki has a hard time finding a place to stay, and runs into some… legal trouble. when she is halted by a police man for causing trouble in the streets, a young boy who takes a great interest to kiki gets her out of it by tricking the officer. he then tries to become friends with kiki, but her customs/ways of male etiquette and the fact that this young boy wasn’t following them made her furious.
while kiki continues her hunt for a place to stay, she finds a young pregnant woman who runs a bakery. one of the lady’s customers has dropped her baby’s pacifier, and is already a ways away from the shop. the lady then decides to walk all the way to the customer herself to return it, but kiki intervenes, offering to return it to the mother for the lady.
the bakery owner accepts the offer, and is surprised to find that kiki is a witch when she takes off on her broom. when kiki comes back, the woman feels obligated to return the favor, inviting kiki inside her home for some tea. there, the woman finds that kiki has no place to stay and lends her the spare room they own.
when kiki stays in the room, she counts up her money and decides that she wants to help the bakery by watching after it and starting a delivery service, where she will take items that need to be delivered and take them to the right place by broom stick. the woman thinks that it’s a good idea, and thus, kiki’s delivery service is born!
not-so-happy kiki... |
but delivering things is not as easy as it seems… kiki runs into many obstacles and emotions that make her doubt her normality as a teenage girl. she runs into the same boy again, and other kids her age that she feels looks to her as an outsider. when kiki realizes this, it makes her lose faith in herself. when she does, it comes with a huge price.
ONTO THE REVIEW:
Chihiro from Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away |
i really haven't any negative feelings towards this movie other than the seemingly slow pace.. i had a hard time concentrating sometimes, but i think that's just because i'm... well... me. (i normally watch very fast paced movies with a new event in every corner.)
anyway, this movie, i feel, is not very action filled as a movie like spirited away, but it still depicts VERY well the emotions any child can feel as they grow older. when you’re open to world full of different people, things can get pretty discouraging. think if it like your first day to kindergarten or coming to live in a different country. it suddenly makes you feel like something is wrong, like you aren’t like other people, but kiki towards the end shows that you should embrace your uniqueness. so what if you are different? it’s what makes you special. she is definitely the symbol of courage for children and adults.
so there we have it! another brilliant movie from hayao miyazaki along with a powerful message and wonderful, smooth animation. i would definitely watch it again and hope anyone who hasn’t does! yay for ghibli!
